How Long Does Teeth Whitening Last? Aftercare and Top-Ups

By the team at Bollington Dental Practice, under the clinical direction of Dr Ellie Burrows, Principal Dentist. Updated October 2026.

Whitening is an investment, so it is natural to want to know how long the result will stay before you commit. The honest answer is that it varies a great deal from person to person, and much of that variation comes down to everyday habits rather than the whitening itself. The encouraging part is that you have real control over it. With a little aftercare and the occasional top-up, most people can keep a brighter smile for a good while, and this guide explains how.

The short answer

Teeth whitening does not last forever, and how long it lasts varies a lot. The NHS says that if you follow your dentist’s advice, the effect may last for around three years. In practice, some people notice their teeth gradually picking up stain within months, while others keep a good result for several years, depending largely on what they eat, drink and smoke. Keeping your whitening trays means you can do a short top-up when you notice it fading, rather than starting again. Our Philips Zoom at-home whitening costs £375.

Why whitening fades, and why it varies

Professional whitening uses a peroxide gel that passes into the tooth and breaks down the stain molecules that make teeth look darker. Once the course is finished, the tooth does not keep getting whiter, and the same things that discoloured it in the first place slowly start working again. Fading is gradual. Most people do not wake up one day with yellow teeth, they simply notice over time that their smile is not quite as bright as it was just after treatment.

What you eat and drink. Tea, coffee, red wine, cola, dark berries, curries and soy sauce all contain strong pigments that settle on and into enamel. Regular coffee or tea drinkers typically see colour return sooner than people who mostly drink water.

Smoking. Tobacco is one of the strongest causes of staining, and smokers usually find whitening fades much faster. Stopping smoking is one of the most effective things you can do to protect the result, quite apart from the wider benefits to your gums and general health.

The type of discolouration you started with. Yellowish shades from ageing and everyday staining usually respond well. Some greyer shades, discolouration from certain medicines, or marks within the enamel respond less predictably, so how bright you get and how long it holds can differ. Your dentist will talk through what is realistic for your teeth before you start.

Age. Enamel gradually thins with age, letting more of the yellower dentine underneath show through. Whitening helps, but this natural change carries on in the background over the years.

Your cleaning routine. Surface stain builds more slowly on teeth that are brushed well twice a day and kept free of tartar, which stains easily. Regular hygiene visits help keep the surface clean and smooth.

Aftercare: keeping your whitening for longer

The first day or two after each session. Straight after whitening, teeth can be a little more porous and pick up stain more easily. Many dentists suggest avoiding strongly coloured food and drink, such as coffee, tea, red wine and curry, and avoiding smoking, for the first day or two after each session. Your dentist will give you specific instructions for your system.

Everyday habits. You do not need to give up coffee or wine for good. A few small changes make a real difference:

  • Rinse with water after dark drinks or strongly coloured food.
  • Use a straw for iced coffee, cola and other cold drinks where you can.
  • Keep staining drinks to mealtimes rather than sipping them slowly through the day.
  • Brush twice a day for about two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste, spitting rather than rinsing. A whitening toothpaste can help manage surface stain, though it cannot change the underlying shade.
  • Keep up with hygiene visits. A professional clean removes tartar and surface stain that brushing leaves behind. Our guide to Airflow teeth cleaning explains a gentle way of lifting stubborn staining.

Sensitivity. Some people notice temporary sensitivity during whitening. It usually settles within a few days of finishing or pausing, and a toothpaste for sensitive teeth can help. If sensitivity is strong, stop and contact us. Our guide on whether teeth whitening is safe explains the side effects and who should wait.

Top-ups: how they work

One advantage of dentist-supervised home whitening is that the trays made for you can be used again. When you notice your teeth have dulled, a short top-up with fresh gel from your dentist can often bring the shade back, without repeating the whole course.

How often? There is no fixed rule. Some people like a brief top-up every year or so, especially heavy tea or coffee drinkers, while others go much longer without one. Your dentist will advise on timing and on how many nights to use the gel, because more is not better. Overdoing whitening does not make teeth whiter than they can naturally go and makes sensitivity more likely.

Look after your trays. Rinse them after use, store them dry in their case, and keep them away from heat, which can warp them. If you have dental work that changes the shape of your teeth, or your teeth move, the trays may no longer fit well, and your dentist can tell you whether new ones are needed. Ask us about the cost of top-up gel or replacement trays, as these are not listed separately on our fees page.

The legal side. In the UK, whitening gels strong enough to lighten teeth can only be supplied through a registered dental professional after an examination, and they cannot be used for cosmetic whitening on anyone under 18. That is another reason top-up gel comes from your dental practice rather than a shop.

Whitening does not change crowns, veneers or fillings

Whitening gel only works on natural tooth. Crowns, veneers, bonding and white fillings stay the same colour, so if you have any on your front teeth, they may look darker than the surrounding teeth after whitening. Your dentist will point this out at your consultation. If you are planning bonding, veneers or crowns, it usually makes sense to whiten first and let the shade settle, typically for about two weeks, before the new work is colour-matched. Our guide on whitening before bonding, veneers or crowns explains how to plan the sequence.

Once new work has been matched to your whitened teeth, it will not lighten with future top-ups, so if your natural teeth gradually pick up stain, an occasional top-up helps keep the two looking consistent.

When a change in colour is not just fading

Whitening fades evenly across the teeth, slowly and over months or years. If a single tooth turns noticeably darker, grey or brown while its neighbours stay bright, that is not your whitening wearing off. A tooth that darkens on its own can be a sign that the nerve inside has been damaged, sometimes after a knock years earlier, and it is worth having it checked rather than trying to whiten over it. Our guide to a dead or dying tooth explains the signs. The same goes for new dark spots or lines, which can be stain but can also be decay or a crack, so let your dentist take a look before any top-up.

What whitening costs here

Our Philips Zoom at-home whitening costs £375. Before whitening, your dentist checks that your teeth and gums are healthy and that whitening is suitable, as decay, leaking fillings or gum problems need dealing with first. A new patient examination is £89 including X-rays. You can read more on our teeth whitening treatment page, and our teeth whitening cost guide explains typical UK prices.

Frequently asked questions

How long does teeth whitening last?

It varies from person to person. The NHS says the effect may last for around three years if you follow your dentist’s advice. Coffee, tea, red wine and smoking bring colour back sooner, while good aftercare and occasional top-ups help the result last longer.

How often do you need to top up teeth whitening?

There is no fixed schedule. Some people do a short top-up with their trays every year or so, while others go longer. Your dentist will advise how often and for how many nights, because using gel more than needed raises the chance of sensitivity without making teeth any whiter.

Does whitening work on crowns and fillings?

No. Whitening only lightens natural tooth, so crowns, veneers, bonding and white fillings stay the same colour. If you have them on visible teeth, your dentist will explain how they might look afterwards and whether any may need replacing to match your new shade.

What should I avoid after teeth whitening?

For the first day or two after each session, many dentists suggest avoiding strongly coloured food and drink such as coffee, tea, red wine and curry, and not smoking. Longer term, rinsing with water after dark drinks and keeping up with hygiene visits helps the result last.
