Airflow is a modern alternative to the traditional scrape and polish. Instead of scraping your teeth with instruments, it uses a controlled jet of warm water, air and fine powder to gently lift away plaque, biofilm and surface staining, including in the places brushing and traditional polishing struggle to reach.
If your teeth are stained by tea, coffee, red wine or smoking, Airflow stain removal is one of the quickest and most comfortable ways to brighten your smile without whitening treatment.
What is Airflow?
Airflow is an air polishing system used by our hygienists as part of a professional clean. The fine powder is much kinder to your enamel than abrasive polishing pastes, and the warm water makes the whole experience far more comfortable, especially if you have sensitive teeth. It is sometimes described as guided biofilm therapy, because it removes the invisible bacterial film that builds up on teeth and around the gum line before it can cause problems.
Routine Airflow and Airflow stain removal
We offer Airflow in two ways at Bollington Dental Practice:
- Routine Airflow, added to your regular hygiene appointment for a deeper, fresher clean than scaling and polishing alone.
- Airflow stain removal, focused on lifting built-up staining from tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco to restore your teeth’s natural brightness.
Both are available as a simple £20 add-on to any hygiene appointment.
Does Airflow hurt?
No. Most patients find Airflow noticeably more comfortable than a traditional scale and polish. There is no scraping and no harsh gritty paste, just warm water and a fine mist. It is a popular choice for nervous patients and anyone with sensitive teeth or gums. You may notice a slightly salty taste during treatment, and that is about as dramatic as the side effects get.
Airflow vs a traditional scale and polish
A traditional clean uses hand instruments to remove hardened tartar, then an abrasive paste to polish. Airflow does not replace scaling where tartar has built up, but it cleans and de-stains more thoroughly, more gently and more quickly than polishing paste, and it reaches areas instruments cannot, such as around crooked teeth, implants, bridges and orthodontic work. For most patients the ideal clean is a hygiene appointment with Airflow added on.

How to book Airflow
Airflow is provided during hygiene appointments for patients under the care of our dentists, as we do not offer direct access hygiene. If you are already a patient, simply ask reception to add Airflow to your next hygiene visit. If you are new to the practice, book an initial examination first (£89 including X-rays) and we will get your hygiene care underway from there.
