Do At-Home Teeth Whitening Kits Work? A UK Dentist's Guide

Search for a way to whiten your teeth at home and you will find strips, LED mouthpieces, charcoal powders, purple toothpastes and a great deal of confident advice from people who are not dentists. Some of it is harmless. Some of it will cost you money and do nothing. A small amount of it can damage your teeth permanently. This guide explains what actually works at home, what the law in the UK allows a shop to sell you, and why the strongest at-home whitening in this country comes from a dental practice rather than a website.

The short answer

Shop-bought whitening kits in the UK are legally limited to a very weak concentration of peroxide, so most of them lift surface staining at best and cannot change the underlying shade of your teeth. Whitening toothpastes work the same way, by polishing off stain rather than whitening the tooth itself.

The at-home whitening that genuinely changes tooth shade is the kind a dentist prescribes: custom-made trays and professional-strength gel that you wear at home over a couple of weeks. At Bollington Dental Practice that is Philips Zoom at-home whitening, and it costs £375. It follows an examination, because whitening gel and undiagnosed dental problems are a poor combination.

Why shop-bought kits are weaker than you expect

This is the single fact that explains most disappointing results, and almost nobody mentions it.

Under UK law, a whitening product sold directly to the public cannot contain or release more than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide. Products between 0.1% and 6% can only be supplied through a dentist, with the first application carried out or supervised at the practice. They cannot legally be used on anyone under 18.

To put that in perspective, professional at-home gel is commonly many times stronger than anything a high street shop is allowed to sell you. A kit bought over the counter is not a weaker version of what a dentist provides. It is a different category of product operating under a different law.

Two things follow from that. First, if a shop-bought kit is legal, it is almost certainly too weak to change your natural tooth shade. Second, if a kit bought online genuinely does bleach your teeth strongly, there is a fair chance it is not compliant with UK law, which brings us to the next point.

What works, what does nothing, and what causes harm

Dentist-prescribed at-home whitening. Works. Custom trays are made from impressions or a scan of your teeth, so the gel sits against the tooth surface and away from your gums. You wear them at home, usually overnight or for a set period each day over two to three weeks. This is the most evidence-backed way to lighten teeth and the results are gradual and controllable.

Whitening toothpaste. Works a little, but not how people think. Whitening toothpastes remove surface stain from tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco using mild abrasives or stain-dissolving agents. That can make teeth look brighter because they are cleaner. It does not lighten the natural colour of the tooth underneath. If your teeth have yellowed with age, toothpaste will not reverse it.

Whitening strips. Mixed. Strips sold legally in the UK carry the same 0.1% limit, so expect modest surface results. Strips also follow the flat plane of your front teeth rather than their actual shape, so gel coverage is uneven and the edges near the gum line often get more exposure than they should.

LED and blue light mouthpieces. Little added benefit. The light is the eye-catching part of the kit, but the evidence that light meaningfully accelerates at-home whitening is weak. The gel does the work. A light attached to a 0.1% gel does not overcome the limits of a 0.1% gel.

Purple toothpastes and colour-correcting products. Cosmetic and temporary. These use violet pigment to counteract yellow tones optically, in the same way purple shampoo works on blonde hair. The effect is real to look at and it washes away. Nothing is being whitened.

Charcoal powders and pastes. Best avoided. Reviews in the dental literature have repeatedly found no good evidence that charcoal whitens teeth, alongside genuine concern about abrasiveness. Anything that scrubs enamel away makes teeth look more yellow over time, because the dentine underneath is naturally darker and becomes more visible as enamel thins.

Lemon juice, vinegar and bicarbonate of soda. Harmful. Acid softens and dissolves enamel. Scrubbing an acid-softened surface accelerates the damage. Enamel does not grow back. This is one of the few home remedies that can cause irreversible harm, and we do see the results of it.

Kits bought from overseas sellers. Risky. Imported products are not bound by UK limits and have been found to contain peroxide at concentrations far above what is legal here. Chemical burns to the gums and lips are a real consequence, and there is nobody accountable if it goes wrong.

Whitening will not work on everything in your mouth

Peroxide lightens natural tooth tissue. It has no effect on:

Crowns, veneers, bridges and white fillings. These stay exactly the shade they were made. If you whiten natural teeth that sit alongside existing dental work, the work will suddenly look darker by comparison, and matching it afterwards means replacing it. Anyone with visible restorations at the front should discuss sequencing before starting, not after.

Stains from inside the tooth. A tooth that has darkened after trauma or root canal treatment usually needs a different approach, because the discolouration is coming from within rather than from the surface.

Tetracycline banding and some developmental marks. These respond poorly or unpredictably to standard whitening, and honest expectations matter more here than technique.

What it costs, and what the NHS covers

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic treatment. It is not available on the NHS, and no NHS band covers it, so any whitening you have will be a private treatment wherever you go.

Our Philips Zoom at-home whitening is £375, which covers the custom trays and the gel. Before whitening we need to see the teeth we are about to treat, so if you are not already a patient with us, the starting point is a new patient examination including X-rays at £89. Existing patients who are up to date with check-ups can usually go straight ahead. Full pricing sits on our fees page.

It is worth saying plainly that whitening is not a substitute for cleaning. If teeth look dull because of built-up staining and plaque, a hygienist appointment often produces a bigger visible improvement than any kit. Ours are £60 for 20 minutes and £89 for 30 minutes, with an Airflow add-on at £20 for heavier staining.

Getting the best result from at-home whitening

Have the check-up first. Whitening gel reaching an undiagnosed cavity, a leaking filling or inflamed gums is the source of most horror stories. An examination first is not an upsell, it is what makes the treatment predictable.

Go slowly if your teeth are sensitive. Sensitivity during whitening is common and temporary, and it is very manageable when planned for. Our guide to whitening with sensitive teeth covers how to prepare.

Expect gradual change. At-home whitening works over two to three weeks. Photographs at the start help, because the change is slow enough that you stop noticing it on your own teeth.

Protect the result. Tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco will re-stain teeth over months and years. Most people top up occasionally with leftover gel rather than starting again from scratch, which is one of the practical advantages of having custom trays that last.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fastest way to whiten teeth at home?

The fastest genuinely effective route is dentist-prescribed at-home whitening with custom trays, which typically shows a visible change within a week or two and completes in two to three weeks. Shop-bought kits are limited by law to concentrations too weak to lighten the natural shade of a tooth quickly or otherwise, so speed is not really the deciding factor between them.

Is hydrogen peroxide safe to use on teeth?

Peroxide is the active ingredient in all legitimate whitening, and it is safe at controlled concentrations under dental supervision. Using undiluted household hydrogen peroxide from a bottle is a different matter and is not safe, because the concentration is uncontrolled and it burns soft tissue readily. Strength, contact time and gum protection are exactly what a dentist is managing.

Do whitening strips actually work?

Strips sold legally in the UK contain very little peroxide, so they mainly address surface staining rather than lightening the tooth itself. They also fit the flat front of the teeth rather than the true shape, so coverage is uneven. People often report the front teeth looking slightly brighter while the corners of the smile stay unchanged.

Can I whiten my teeth if I have fillings or crowns?

Whitening does not change the colour of fillings, crowns, veneers or bridges. Your natural teeth will lighten and any existing dental work will stay as it is, which can leave it looking darker by comparison. If you have visible restorations at the front, talk to us about the order of treatment first, because in some cases replacing the work after whitening is the right plan.
