Clicking Jaw and Jaw Pain: Causes, Self-Help and When to See a Dentist

A jaw that clicks when you yawn, chew or open wide is common enough that in most rooms someone can demonstrate it on request. For most people it is a harmless quirk. For some it comes with aching, stiffness, headaches or a jaw that occasionally will not open properly, and that combination has a name, a set of causes and, reassuringly, a set of simple measures that help most people without any dramatic treatment.

The short answer

Clicking usually comes from the jaw joint, the temporomandibular joint or TMJ, just in front of each ear. Inside it sits a small cartilage disc that cushions movement, and when that disc slips slightly out of position and snaps back as you open or close, you hear the click. A painless click needs no treatment at all. Pain, aching muscles, restricted opening or locking are what deserve attention, and the mainstays are rest, gentle exercises, managing clenching and grinding, and time. Most jaw joint problems settle without any invasive treatment.

What causes it

The disc slipping. The click itself is the cushioning disc moving out of and back into place. Why it happens varies: joint shape, a past knock, hypermobility, or no identifiable reason at all.

Clenching and grinding. The biggest treatable factor. Grinding at night or clenching through the day overworks the jaw muscles and loads the joint, and the first many people know of it is morning jaw ache, headaches around the temples, or a partner mentioning the noise. This overlaps heavily with our guide to teeth grinding, and worn, flattened teeth are often the visible evidence.

Stress. Not a platitude here: stress shows up physically as clenched jaw muscles, and flare-ups track stressful periods with suspicious reliability.

Habits that overwork the joint. Chewing gum for hours, nail biting, chewing pens, resting your chin on your hand, and wide sustained yawning all add load.

An uneven bite or missing back teeth. When the back teeth do not meet properly, or gaps mean chewing happens in one spot, the joint takes uneven load. This is one reason replacing lost back teeth matters beyond appearance.

Arthritis and injury affect the TMJ as they can any joint, more relevant with age or after a blow to the jaw.

Self-help that genuinely works

Rest the joint. Softer food for a couple of weeks, smaller bites, cut the gum habit, and avoid opening extremely wide, propping your yawn with a fist under the chin if needed.

Heat on the muscles. A warm compress against the side of the face for ten minutes eases muscular ache better than most people expect.

Notice daytime clenching. The classic prompt: teeth apart, lips together. Your teeth should only actually touch when you chew and swallow. People are frequently astonished to discover how much of the day they spend clamped.

Gentle jaw exercises. Slow, controlled opening and closing in front of a mirror, keeping the jaw moving straight rather than deviating, a few minutes daily. Physiotherapy-style exercises have decent evidence for TMJ discomfort.

Standard pain relief in a short course during flare-ups, as advised by the packet or your pharmacist.

What not to do: repeatedly clicking the joint on purpose to test it, chewing through the pain on the affected side, or assuming a locked jaw will free itself with force.

Where a dentist comes in, and what it costs

Jaw joint problems sit genuinely in dental territory, because the two biggest treatable contributors, grinding and the bite, are dental. At an examination we check the joint, the muscles, the pattern of wear on your teeth and how your bite meets, which usually identifies the driver. For new patients that examination is £89 including X-rays.

Where night-time grinding is the driver, a custom night guard protects the teeth and calms the overworked muscles. We make these to fit from impressions of your own teeth, and pricing depends on the type, so ask us at your examination for the honest figure rather than a guess. Where missing back teeth are loading the joint unevenly, options such as a bridge or denture restore proper chewing support. Persistent or severe TMJ problems that do not respond to conservative care are referred to a specialist, and we will tell you plainly if yours is one of them. All our prices are on our fees page.

Weighing up whether to ring us? Two minutes with the urgency checker tells you how urgent your symptom really is and what helps in the meantime.

Frequently asked questions

Is a clicking jaw serious?

On its own, almost never. A painless click is the cushioning disc in the joint moving slightly, and huge numbers of people have one with no problem ever developing. It becomes worth assessing when clicking comes with pain, aching muscles, headaches, restricted opening or episodes of locking.

How do I stop my jaw clicking?

Honestly, a painless click often cannot be permanently stopped, and does not need to be. What responds well is the discomfort around it: resting the joint, softer food, heat on the muscles, breaking clenching habits and gentle exercises settle most flare-ups within a few weeks.

Why does my jaw hurt on one side?

One-sided jaw ache is commonly the joint or its muscles, especially if it is worse on waking or after chewing, and often tracks grinding, clenching or chewing habitually on that side. It can also be a tooth problem further forward, so pain that centres on a tooth, throbs or wakes you belongs with our toothache guidance rather than the joint.

When should I see someone about jaw pain?

See a dentist if pain persists beyond a couple of weeks of self-care, if your opening is restricted, if the joint locks, or if your teeth show wear from grinding. Seek urgent care if the jaw locks open or closed and stays locked, or if jaw pain follows a significant injury.

Jaw aching more days than not?

Bring it to a check-up and we will look at the joint, the muscles and what your teeth reveal about grinding. Call 01625 574609 to book. A new patient examination is £89 including X-rays, and our prices are on our fees page.
