Tartar Removal: Why You Cannot Scrape It Off at Home

Somewhere online right now, someone is selling a “dental tool kit” with a little mirror and a metal scraper, promising you can remove your own tartar at home. This article exists to talk you out of it. Tartar is one of the few dental problems where the honest answer is genuinely “you cannot do this yourself”, not because dentistry is protecting its turf, but because of what tartar is, where it sits, and what a slip with a sharp instrument does to enamel and gums.

The short answer

Tartar, also called calculus, is plaque that has hardened with minerals from your saliva into a crusty, bonded deposit. Once it has formed, no toothbrush, toothpaste, rinse or home remedy will remove it, and scraping at it yourself risks gouging enamel, lacerating gums and driving deposits under the gum line. Removing it safely takes a hygienist with proper instruments, and at Bollington Dental Practice that is £60 for a 20-minute appointment or £89 for 30 minutes, with an Airflow stain-removal add-on at £20. What you genuinely can do at home is prevent the next lot forming, and you can do that extremely well.

What tartar actually is

Plaque, the soft film of bacteria that forms on teeth constantly, is easy to remove: that is what brushing is. But plaque that survives longer than a day or two starts absorbing calcium and phosphate from saliva and hardening. Within about two weeks it has mineralised into tartar, chemically bonded to the tooth surface, with a rough exterior that new plaque colonises even faster. That is the vicious circle: tartar makes more plaque stick, which makes more tartar.

It concentrates where saliva enters the mouth, behind the lower front teeth and on the cheek side of the upper back molars, which is why those spots feel crusty first. Above the gum line it is yellowish or brown and visible. Below the gum line it is darker, invisible, and more damaging, because it keeps the gum inflamed from a place your brush cannot reach at all. That inflammation is gingivitis, and untreated it progresses to the gum disease covered in our bleeding gums guide, which is the main way adults lose teeth.

Why home removal goes wrong

The tools are the same shape, without the training. A scaler is sharp because it has to be. Used at the wrong angle it scratches enamel, and scratched enamel is rougher, which collects plaque faster and stains more deeply. You cannot polish out your own scratches afterwards; a hygienist polishes as the final step for exactly this reason.

The tartar that matters most is the tartar you cannot see. Below the gum line, working blind, home scraping either misses it entirely or pushes deposits and bacteria deeper into the pocket, converting a cleaning problem into an infection problem.

Gums bleed and retract when injured. A slip lacerates the gum, and repeated trauma contributes to the gum recession that exposes root surfaces, which then get sensitive and decay faster than enamel.

And the internet remedies do not work either. Baking soda cannot dissolve mineralised calculus. Vinegar and lemon juice soften your enamel long before they trouble the tartar. Whitening toothpastes polish surface stain, not bonded mineral deposits. Oil pulling has no credible evidence for tartar removal at all.

What professional removal involves, and what it costs

A hygienist removes tartar with ultrasonic and hand instruments designed for the job, above and below the gum line, then polishes the surfaces smooth so new plaque has less to grip. It is methodical rather than heroic, most patients find it comfortable, and if your teeth are sensitive, say so when you book and it will be worked around. Our guide to hygienist costs in the UK covers the wider market; here it is £60 for 20 minutes or £89 for 30 minutes, with heavier build-up suiting the longer slot.

For staining on top of the tartar problem, the Airflow system, a fine jet of air, water and powder, lifts tea, coffee, wine and tobacco staining as a £20 add-on, covered in our Airflow guide.

One honest housekeeping note: hygiene appointments here need an up-to-date examination with us, within the last year, so if you are new to the practice the route in is a new patient examination at £89 including X-rays, and we arrange your hygiene visit alongside it. Our dental plan from £15.95 a month includes routine hygiene visits and exams, which for most regulars beats paying as you go. Everything is on our fees page.

Prevention, where you genuinely are in charge

Tartar cannot form from plaque that gets removed in time, and the window is generous, about 24 to 48 hours. Twice-daily brushing with attention behind the lower front teeth, daily interdental cleaning with floss or brushes between the teeth where a brush cannot reach, and spitting rather than rinsing after brushing so fluoride keeps working. An electric brush helps most people cover the awkward spots more consistently. None of this removes existing tartar, but it is the whole reason some people need a scale and polish twice a year and others barely need one.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove tartar at home?

No, not safely and not effectively. Tartar is mineralised and bonded to the tooth, so brushes, pastes and rinses cannot shift it, and scraping with home tools risks scratched enamel, injured gums and deposits pushed below the gum line. Removal is a hygienist’s job; prevention is yours, and prevention works.

What dissolves tartar?

Nothing you can safely put in your mouth. Anything acidic enough to soften calculus damages enamel first, which is why vinegar and lemon remedies are actively harmful. Professional removal is mechanical, with instruments designed to take deposits off the tooth without taking the tooth with them.

How much does tartar removal cost?

At Bollington Dental Practice a hygiene appointment is £60 for 20 minutes or £89 for a full 30-minute session, with an Airflow stain-removal add-on at £20. New patients start with an examination at £89 including X-rays, and our dental plan from £15.95 a month includes routine hygiene visits.

What happens if tartar is not removed?

It accumulates, keeps the gum beside it permanently inflamed, and progresses gingivitis towards periodontitis, where the bone supporting the teeth is gradually lost. Bleeding gums, bad breath and eventually loose teeth follow. Tartar removal is one of the most preventative things in dentistry, which is why it is routine rather than cosmetic.
