Whaley Bridge sits on the Derbyshire side of the hills, but for dentistry the smart run is west: along the B5470 through Kettleshulme and Rainow, dropping into Bollington in about a quarter of an hour. That road ends at an independent, family-run practice that has served this side of the Peak since 1977, where every price is published, the phone gets answered, and a first examination can be booked online at any hour.

Why patients cross the hill from Whaley Bridge

  • About 15 minutes over the B5470, one of the nicest drives to a dental appointment anywhere
  • 5.0 on Google from more than 160 verified patient reviews
  • Independent since 1977, so recommendations follow your teeth, not a sales sheet
  • Open pricing on everything via the fees page
  • Free parking next to the door, and daily emergency slots where possible

What we can do for you

Everyday care is straightforward: new patient examinations at £89 including any X-rays needed, hygiene visits from £60 with Airflow stain removal for £20 more, and fillings from £95. The dental plan starts at £15.95 a month and includes two hygiene visits a year plus 15% off most treatment, useful when you are watching the pennies as well as the miles.

For bigger changes, we provide Philips Zoom whitening at £375 complete, ClearCorrect clear aligners from £2,499, composite bonding and veneers, and full restorative dentistry without referral elsewhere: crowns from £600, dentures from £625, root canal from £305, and implants placed and restored in-house, £180 consultation with 3D imaging, single implants from £3,000.

Urgent problem? We keep same-day emergency slots where possible, charged at standard prices.

Every review is on our testimonials page.

Nearly fifty years on the other side of the hill

By the time you have driven the B5470 from Whaley Bridge a few times, you will know the practice at the end of it has been there far longer than most. David King established it in 1977, Heather Belfield grew it over the decades that followed, and principal dentist Dr Ellie Burrows leads it now. It has never belonged to a chain: independent and family-run under all three, and intending to stay that way.

The team Ellie leads is a substantial one for a town this size: five dentists, two hygienists and a dental therapist, each of them GDC-registered. For High Peak patients that means real choice of clinician and very few reasons ever to be sent somewhere else for treatment. Many of the team live locally too, on both sides of the hill, so the accent in the surgery is usually the same as the one in the waiting room.

Community sponsorship is part of how we operate: Macclesfield FC carry our name, and so do the children’s teams at Bollington United FC and Bollington Cricket Club. A practice pushing fifty years of service to these valleys should be visible in them, on match days as well as in surgery hours. Longevity like that is not an accident; it comes from treating each patient as someone the practice hopes to still be seeing decades from now, and it is why recommendations here follow your teeth rather than a revenue target.

Bringing the children along

Whaley Bridge families tend to arrive together, which suits us, because we treat every age and we build the diary around households. Back-to-back family appointments mean one journey over from SK23 covers the lot: children seen in sequence with their parents, nobody making the trip twice in a week.

For the youngest, we keep it playful. A first appointment might be little more than counting teeth, pressing the chair buttons and collecting a sticker, and that is entirely the point, because a child whose early visits were easy becomes an adult who books check-ups without thinking. Our advice page on a child’s first visit sets out how to prepare and what to expect on the day, including what to say beforehand and, just as usefully, what not to.

On cost, the position is worth stating plainly: wherever possible we aim to offer NHS care for children free of charge. Add in practical coaching on brushing, and straight talk with parents about squash, snacks and fluoride, and the aim is children from the canal basin to Kettleshulme who reach adulthood with intact, healthy teeth and no fear of the dentist whatsoever.

How a new patient appointment runs

Give yourself the quarter of an hour along the B5470 through Kettleshulme and Rainow, and when you arrive the parking beside the practice is free, so the journey ends at our door rather than three streets away. The appointment proper opens with your medical history, taken carefully, because what we prescribe and how we treat you depends on knowing it.

What follows is a full examination rather than a glance. Teeth and existing dental work are checked one by one, any X-rays needed are taken there and then, your gum health is properly assessed, and screening for mouth cancer is built into every new patient examination as standard. Many patients from Whaley Bridge tell us it is the most thorough going-over their mouth has ever had.

Before you head back over the hill, everything is explained and, where treatment makes sense, written down: a treatment plan with the exact price beside every item, yours to take home and consider by the canal basin at leisure. Not a single procedure goes ahead until you agree to it. The fee for all of this, X-rays included, is £89.

Set aside about an hour, bring a note of any medicines you take, and if you happen to know where your old dental records live, tell us; nothing else is required of you. Plenty of Whaley Bridge patients pair the appointment with errands in Bollington and make one useful trip of it.

What things cost, and how you will know

Our promise on money is that you will always know first. The complete price list is published on the fees page, so a patient in Whaley Bridge can check the cost of anything we do without picking up the phone, let alone crossing the hill. Before any treatment is carried out, you hold a written plan stating the exact charge for each element, agreed in advance; estimates that drift upwards are not how this practice works.

The dental plan suits patients who like their routine care budgeted to the month. For £15.95 a month it provides an annual examination with mouth cancer screening, two hygiene visits a year and routine X-rays, plus 15% off most treatments and worldwide dental emergency cover, valuable whether trouble strikes in the High Peak or halfway round the world.

A scheduling note for newcomers: hygiene appointments can only be booked once you have had an examination with us within the last year. In practice that just means your first booking is the examination, and the hygienist follows on naturally afterwards.

Written plans have another advantage that only shows itself later: they let you stage treatment sensibly. Urgent work can be done now and the rest spread across months in an order you have agreed, with each stage priced before it starts. Patients budgeting carefully appreciate knowing that the plan in the kitchen drawer is the whole story, with nothing waiting to be added at the desk.

Coming back after years away, or changing practice

Between High Peak waiting lists and the general shortage of dental places, plenty of Whaley Bridge people have simply gone without a dentist for years, and others are clinging to a practice they no longer like because moving feels complicated. Neither situation carries any shame here, and neither is hard to fix. Whichever describes you, the welcome is identical, and so is the absence of questions about how you got here.

Long gap first: come in for the standard £89 new patient examination and let us look. We see the state of the teeth, not the story behind them, so the conversation is about options, not explanations. Where teeth have suffered, the range of realistic repairs is wider than most people imagine, and our page on what can be done for neglected teeth lays it out honestly before you even book.

Changing practice second: records transfer is simple, and we do the work. Give us the name of your current dentist and your consent, and your notes and X-rays follow you here without you writing a single letter. The fifteen minutes west on the B5470 is usually the largest effort involved in the entire switch.

When the appointment itself is the worry

For some patients the obstacle was never the journey from Whaley Bridge; it is the door of any dental practice at all. If that is you, know that anxious patients are a group we take particular care of, starting with time. Your appointments are unhurried by design, with no conveyor-belt feeling and no watching the clock.

Our method is transparency. Everything is explained before it happens, in whatever depth you find calming, and nothing begins until you say so. You keep the power to pause or stop at any second, and using it is always fine. Patients who need two or three gentle visits before any treatment happens get two or three gentle visits, without a flicker of impatience from anyone.

We could describe the results, but our reviewers do it better: a striking share of our five-star Google reviews are written by patients who arrived frightened after years of avoidance and now attend calmly. Mention any anxiety when you book and the team will have everything arranged before you have even left SK23. However long the fear has been in charge, the first small appointment is the whole battle, and we will make it as small as you need it to be.

One more difference worth naming: when you ring us from Whaley Bridge, a person at the practice picks up, not a call centre three counties away. That is what independence looks like in daily life. The receptionist who answers can see the diary, knows the clinicians, and quite often recognises your voice before you have finished saying your name. Questions get answered on the spot, messages actually reach the right person, and small problems are sorted in one call rather than a chain of them. In a practice where many patients have been coming for decades, being known is not a marketing line; it is simply what happens when the same team looks after the same families year after year, and it makes every part of dentistry feel less like admin.

Budgeting for treatment? The cost checker lets you add up the treatments you are considering and see the plan-member price next to the standard one.
